Mineral oil is a derivative of the crude petroleum that comes with
the continuous distillation and purification of the crude oil. Unlike other
derivatives as kerosene or gasoline mineral oil is a clear, odor and color free
byproduct. Chemically it is more or less similar to the petroleum jelly but
there are some major differentiations in between.
The main byproducts of crude petroleum are aromatic, paraffinic
and naphthenic. The differentiation is basically made according to the
processes the oil is distilled into and the types of alkalis it is made from.
Uses of Mineral oil:
This particular ingredient of mineral oil is quite valuable and
the product is widely used as a medicine, lubricant- both industrial as well as
for home use, as the base product of varying cosmetics such as lipsticks,
foundations and differing creams and lotions and much more.
Mineral oil can be so freely and widely used as it is known to be
the most non allergic material among all the petroleum byproducts. In the late
19th century this oil first came to be marketed as medical treats.
Before that this liquid was more popular as industrial lubricants. It first
came into use for medical purpose as an aid for constipation and internal
lubrication.
Then gradually it came into the light for the external usage as
well. It has a cooling and moisturizing effect on skin surface and prevents
from cracks and chippings, letting the skin more lively. It was first known by
the name of Nuzol and it came to be known as a preventive for the large
intestines’ absorption of water. Other than that it came to be used in a number
of other ways. If this liquid at a lukewarm state is applied a few drops within
the eardrum then ear pain due to long time earwax and other impurities can be
softened and taken out of the way.
Mineral oil is highly effective as industrial lubricant as it is a
poor conductor of electricity as well as heat. Thus when applied on machine
joints they can provide easy movements of machine parts without producing much
heat due to the commotion occurring in every second due to movements of the
parts.
Mineral oil is used in ships and other iron made water vessels as
it helps these machines to prevent rust and damage for a longer time. It also
is capable of resisting depression. Thus this liquid is widely used in
hydraulic press and enterprises.
Other than uses in the medical and industrial fields mineral oil
can be used in personal uses as well. Adult as well as children can be advised
to use this liquid for moisturizing skin.
